Many older homes were built long before today's fire safety standards. Their charm is worth keeping — but their protection deserves an update. These upgrades make the biggest difference.
Interconnected smoke alarms
When one alarm sounds, they all sound. Place them in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas and on every level so everyone is alerted, wherever the fire starts.
Carbon monoxide detection
Older furnaces, water heaters and fireplaces can produce carbon monoxide. CO alarms near sleeping areas are essential in homes with fuel-burning appliances.
Electrical updates
Outdated wiring, overloaded circuits and missing protection devices are common in older homes. A safety review can identify issues before they become hazards.
Fire-rated materials
During renovations, fire-rated drywall between the garage and living spaces, solid-core doors and properly sealed penetrations slow the spread of fire.
Accessible extinguishers and exits
Keep extinguishers in the kitchen, garage and near fireplaces. Make sure windows open easily and every bedroom has a clear way out.
